Feature : Gunna

04:10:00

Hi guys! Hope you've had a great week. Today we have another feature for you! We had a little interview with, artist Ugonna Ikechi, popularly known as Gunna. He has shared somethings about himself with us. Enjoy!

 Can you please introduce yourself?

My name is Gunna and i'm a multi-media artist, in the sense that i express myself through a variety of media.

What does being creative mean to you?

To me, being creative means being able to make things (be it actual visual art, poetry, decisions or music) with sincere expression of yourself. It's possible for a secretary to be more creative than a graphic designer.

Does your background have anything to do with your love for art or its inborn?

I'd want to say it's inborn but my background is definitely a major factor towards my love for art; which could also mean that it's inborn. I remember recreating drawings i saw around me; from my brothers' to my older cousin's (his mum was an artist) and my uncle's, in particular. I'd bug them to draw things for me and in awe, i'd attempt to draw my own versions. I had these people as sources around me and i guess i just kept absorbing inspiration from them. And they're fam, so it may be safe to say it's inborn as well.

Who or what inspires you to do what you do?

Art inspires me to make art. When you realize that everything is art, you peep the creativity even in the seemingly basic things in life. That gives me an idea of how artistic, versatile and calculated God, the supreme creator, is and then there's actual artists that really inspire me like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yasiin Bey, Kelvin Okafor, Pharrell Williams, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Mick Jenkins, Kanye West, Erykah Badu... i could go on.

You have a clothing line (Zone district), a music group (Coast blue) and You are also into art (TheGunnaVision). Do you think you love doing one over the others? And if so which would it be and why?

Lol s/o coast blue and dark martyr. I love creating with whichever medium. I view my pieces as art in general but i'd say i'm most comfortable making visual art; i've had a lifetime of practice so that makes sense. I can't stop making art in either of these realms (zone district, music or visuals) even if it tried.. I have tried.

Do you try to send any message with your art? And what is that message?

I don't have a primary message that I constantly try to send but yeah, I have pieces with individual messages i'm trying to convey. They can range from peace, duality and spirituality to social issues like racism and gender roles. It isn't always premeditated; often times the message can be drawn after expressing whatever i felt in the piece.

What is your favourite art piece and why?

I'd have to say 'the lone stray' - a painting i did in 2013. It's one of my earliest paintings and it came out so ill. It was a discovery piece, in the sense that i found out some of my capabilities. It turns out that my mum loves it just as much as i do (maybe more), so i gave it to her. Currently though, my most recent piece (at that particular moment) is my favourite. we constantly improve so i guess it's expected.

Is it difficult being a creative? What challenges have you personally faced?

It can be difficult, yeah. Non-creatives often view the arts as insignificant; so if people around you don't value your work or lifestyle, it can be a task financially if you fall into the feeling of lack of self-worth. It helps surrounding yourself with like-minded people who believe in your vision.

What advice can you give people who are afaraid to express their creativity with the fear of being different?

Now, there's nothing to fear about being different. If anything, that's a plus in the creative world. So just keep expressing yourself through whichever medium you feel. Never feed into the pressure to conform with what others are doing; if you feel something, express it as you wish.

What does an anomaly mean to you?

An anomaly, to me, is something different, not regular, out of the ordinary... not being able to be put in a box, which is creativity in its true sense.

Now we are going ask a different set of questions, just to get to know Gunna better.

Describe yourself in one word.

Creative.

Name 5 series you can’t stop watching.

Sherlock and Game of thrones.. that's about it. Lie to me as well, but i haven't seen that in a minute.

Name 5 tings you can’t leave home without.

My keys, wallet, sunglasses, earphones and my phone.

One crazy dream you had as a kid.

I don't remember a lot of them, but i had a few recurring dreams that freaked me out. They weren't particularly nightmares and i think that made the recurrences more weird. I remember one of them with an extremely tall figure, in a black suit and a top hat, roaming the streets at night. He never did or said anything; he just walked and walked.

If you could have any super power what would it be?

Mind control. That'll be way too convenient.

 Your celebrity crush?

It was Lisa Bonet for a while when i was younger. I haven't had anyone particular in a bit; the last person i remember was Eku Edewor.

 Your favourite word?

I'm not actually sure. I say "hectic" a whole lot though.. yeah, it probably is hectic.

Your biggest dream?

That's a big question. My biggest dream has to be me becoming a world-renowned paradigm-shifting artist in my generation. To break boundaries within different sectors of art and life as a whole. That'll be super dope.
